Nicholas Howell of Spotsylvania reportedly threatened a family member with a weapon on July 18 at around 5:55 p.m., the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office announced.

When the first deputy arrived at the scene, Howell charged at the officer with a 33-inch Spartan Warrior Style Sword, officials reported.

The officer said he fired shots at Howell in order to remain safe and contain the suspect’s rage.

The deputy immediately tended to Howell’s gunshot wounds before he was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital, authorities said.

Howell, who was listed in stable condition, was charged with attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, police said.

The deputy was placed on administrative leave per department policy while the case remains open, the sheriff’s office said.

Police said additional charges may be sought when the investigation comes to a close.
